The reliability of the perspective map: the group of urban characteristics
The final result of this investigation was satisfactory in the sense that many correspondences were traced between the buildings in the painting and those still standing. The highly imaginative interventions were, instead, limited to circumscribed situations (Palazzo Boncompagni, the facade of St Petronio), and as regards "personal" interventions, these come within the bounds of recognition of typically local building and architectonic elements. This means that the scene portrayed in the perspective map does not correspond precisely to the real Bologna - and one did not expect that it would, given that even a photograph is the result of an interpretation - however it is certainly "reasonably truthful", in line with the aims of painting cities of that time.
