Relationship between the lengths of the streets in 1575 and 1715
The relationships calculated between the street lengths in the Vatican map and that of a map from 1715( the first one drawn up with geometric precision) have been classified into five groups that go from a ratio of less than 2 up to one greater than 2.7
The average ratio is 2.5. Deviation from this average value, in excess or in defect, represents the degree of distortion in the Vatican map with respect to the real dimensions of the city.
If the artist had used a single system of representation of the scale, this spectrum of values would not be seen, in other words, the map is not drawn to a single scale but utilises 5 different scales, or better, since it is an axonometric projection, 5 different inclinations.
