This is an important notarial register, compiled by order of the Comune of Bologna, where all the ground markers, that defined at ground level the boundary between public and private space in the main squares and along the city walls, were registered.

The precise description with the measurements of the position of each ground marker (there are 479 in all) enabled these to be located on a present day map.
If the upper stories of the houses overlapped public air space, these projections were recorded very accurately.
