a very in-depth historical research, based on various sources of different nature, of these periods: archaeological finds are prevalent for the Age of Antiquity, while for the Early Middle Ages it is necessary to add narrative sources and primary documentation to the results of the archaeological research. One by one, we approach the present times, the number and the typology of the documents are intensified, and in the modern and contemporary age it is necessary to take into consideration iconographic, fiscal, and cartographic sources. Here we will present in particular the problems connected to the use of medieval age documented sources and iconographic sources.
