During the first half of the thirteenth century, the city had around 50,000 inhabitants. It was a major metropolis, comparable with contemporary European cities.
The perimeter of the thirteenth-century walls was sufficient for city development until the end of the nineteenth century. Even today, all of the main administrative, ecclesiastic and cultural centres are still within the thirteenth-century walls.
The large public square (Piazza Maggiore) was opened in the year 1200.
