In medieval times, the cityís most important families built many towers. In the thirteenth century, there were dozens of towers, most of which, for political reasons, were later demolished. The oldest are the Asinelli and Garisenda towers. The Asinelli tower is 96 m high. The Garisenda tower leans at a very noticeable angle and its construction was, therefore, halted.
