Buildings with porticoes were built from the middle of Medieval times onwards and continue to be built even today. The first documented evidence of porticoes places them at the end of the 11th century.
Almost all roads in the old centre are lined on both sides by continuous porticoes. Today there are still 37 km of porticoes on the roads within the city walls. There is also a 6 km portico, built in the 17th century, which extends as far as the S. Luca sanctuary.
