Bologna is one of Italyís principal cities. It is the largest city in the Emilia-Romagna region, of which it is the administrative centre. Today, the city of Bologna has 400,000 inhabitants, and a long historical and cultural tradition.
It is world-famous as the site of the first University in Europe, established near the end of the 11th century, in around 1088.
It is also renowned for an urban and architectural feature: its ěporticoesî. Moreover, the urban landscape of the old centre is marked by many medieval towers.
