Research on urban history: the second half of the ë80s brought the first results from Autocad programs and digital cartography
The first IT applications for research on urban history, created at the University of Bologna, examined XV century fiscal sources.
The documentation consisted of a notarial register from 1472 which contained a record of all of the houses in the town of Carpi, with a wealth of detail, so much in fact that researchers were even able to reconstruct the social,
economic and institutional structure of a town which, at the time, was the capital of a small independent state. The next step in this area of research was the processing of cartography in digital form, which led to a considerable development in studies relating to town history.
